서론. 코끼리가 들어온 집

지난 3월 23일 서울의 어린이대공원에서 ‘세로’라는 이름을 가진 수컷 얼룩말이 탈출하여 차들이 오고가는 큰 도로와 좁은 뒷골목을 돌아다니는 일이 발생하여 SNS에서 큰 화제가 되었습니다. 다행히 전문가들의 도움으로 구의동 골목길에서 포위돼 마취총에 맞은 뒤 탈출 3시간 30분 만에 동물원으로 돌아왔습니다. 서울 도시 한복판에서 야생동물이 그것도 얼룩말이 뛰어다니는 광경을 본 시민들은 얼마나 황당했을까요? 일생에 한 번 볼까 말까 한 진귀한 장면입니다.

그런데 사실 서울 어린이대공원에서 동물이 탈출한 것이 이번이 처음이 아닙니다. 이보다 더 놀라운 동물원 탈출 사건이 있었습니다. 지난 2005년 4월 20일에는 코끼리 6마리가 집단으로 탈출하는 대소동이 벌어졌습니다. 도시에서 말 한 마리만 날뛰어도 엄청난 일인데, 코끼리가 그것도 6마리나 집단으로 도시를 돌아다니고 있으니 말 그대로 대소동이 벌어졌습니다. 코끼리들은 사람을 들이 받고 기물을 부수는 등 한바탕 난리를 피우다가 서울시 광진구 모진동 건국대학교 후문 쪽에 있는 [미가]라는 이름의 식당에 들어갔습니다. 식당 안에 코끼리 3마리가 들어가면서 한바탕 난동이 벌어졌는데요. 당시 코끼리들은 음식점 안에 있던 당근 등 야채들을 집어 먹었고, 가게 유리창이 깨지고, 배달 오토바이가 망가지고, 탁자와 의자들이 다 부셔지는 등 큰 재산 피해를 입게 되었습니다.

당시 음식점 주인이었던, 금택훈씨는 황당함에 할말을 잃었습니다. 게다가 생업의 현장인 가게가 엉망이 되어 식당을 운영할 수 없게 되었습니다. “코끼리가 가게에 들어와서 식기와 기구들을 다 망가트려 놓았다”고 말해도 사람들이 믿지 않을 만큼 황당한 일이었습니다. 천만다행으로 피해보상금을 받게 된 주인 금씨는 이 참에 자기 돈을 더 보태어 오래된 가게 리모델링을 하게 되었고, 가게 이름도 [미가]에서, [코끼리 들어온 집 미가]로 바꾸었습니다. 그리고 식당 메뉴판에 새로운 메뉴로 [코끼리 정식]을 넣었습니다. 사건 이후 식당은 유명세를 타게 됩니다. 시민들 사이에 “코끼리가 들어갔던 집이 바로 이 집이래!”하면서 호기심을 타더니 말 그대로 문전성시를 이루며 식당 손님이 눈에 뛰게 늘어나 식당 매출이 올라갔습니다. 말 그대로 대박난 식당이 되어 버린 것이죠.

불행한 상황으로만 생각했던 일이나 사건이, 전혀 예상치 못하고 상상하지도 못했던 복을 가져다 주는 경우를 가리켜 ‘전화위복’ 또는 ‘반화위복’이라고 말할 수 있겠습니다. 재앙과 근심, 걱정이 바뀌어 오히려 복이 된 것이죠. 오늘 본문 속 사도 바울은 자신의 삶에 일어난 전화위복의 스토리를 들려줍니다. 우리가 그의 이야기를 흥미롭게 읽을 수 있는 이유는 사도 바울이 경험한 전화위복의 은혜가 우리 모든 성도들에게도 동일하게 적용되기 때문입니다. 혹시 요즘 “나는 불행하다”고 생각하며 살아가는 분들이 계십니까? “나는 왜 이런 나쁜 상황에 처했는가?”, “왜 내 인생은 되는 일이 없나?”하고 좌절하는 분들은 없으십니까? 오늘 말씀을 통해서 하나님께서 고난 중에 우리 삶 가운데 어떻게 역사하고 계신지, 또한 고난 중에 우리는 어떻게 믿음으로 반응할 수 있는지 함께 말씀을 통해 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.

1. 고난이 도리어 하나님의 역사를 이루다.

오늘 본문 속 사도 바울은 로마 감옥에 투옥되어 있습니다. 사도행전 28장 20절 말씀을 보면, 바울의 몸은 쇠사슬에 매여 있습니다. “[행28:20] 이러므로 너희를 보고 함께 이야기하려고 청하였으니 이스라엘의 소망으로 말미암아 내가 이 쇠사슬에 매인 바 되었노라” 사도 바울은 예수님의 십자가 죽음과 부활에 대하여 증거하고, 복음에 대하여 가르치다가 붙잡혀 이처럼 쇠사슬을 매고 감옥에 갇힌 죄수가 되었습니다.

인간적인 시각에서 보면 바울이 감옥에 갇히게 된 사건은, 여러 도시들을 순회하며 교회를 개척하고 예수 그리스도를 증거하던 바울의 복음 전파 사역에 상당한 지장을 초래할 만한 일이었습니다. 본문 속 바울이 처한 상황을 오늘날로 비유해 봅시다. 우리가 작은 비지니스를 운영하고 있는 사장이라고 생각해 봅시다. 어느 날 가게 손님으로부터 억울하게 큰 소송이 걸려서 가게 문을 닫아야 하는 상황이 되어 버렸습니다. 열심히 일하고 살아가던 어느 날 갑작스럽게 건강에 이상이 생겨서, 기약 없이 병원 침대에만 하루 종일 누워 있어야 하는 상황입니다. 가정에 불화가 있거나 개인적으로 처한 특별한 상황이 너무 힘들어서 그만두고 다 떠나고 싶은데 그럴 수가 없는 처지 입니다. 가장 힘든 것은 언제까지 이런 생활을 계속 이어 나가야 하는지 모른 채, 기약 없이 버텨야만 하는 상황입니다.

이처럼 우리는 살아가면서 우리 힘으로 도저히 이겨낼 수 없는, 벗어날 수 없는 여러가지 고난들을 마주하게 됩니다. 어떤 분들은 때로는 자신이 처한 신세를 한탄해 보기도 합니다. 또 때로는 현실의 상황을 타개할 수 없는 나의 무능력과 한계이 절망하며 여태까지 살아온 지난 날들을 후회하며 한 숨 쉬기도 합니다. 또 어떤 분들은 자신이 겪고 있는 모든 불행을 주변 사람들의 탓으로 돌리며 원망하며 미움으로 살아가기도 합니다. “아이구, 내 팔자야… 내가 어쩌다가 저 원수 같은 사람 만나서 이 지경이 되었나…” 심한 경우 자기 부모를 원망하는 사람, 자기 배우자를 원망하는 사람, 자기 형제나 자매, 그리고 자식을 원망하는 사람도 있습니다.

그런데 이처럼 사람을 향한 원망과 불평은 사람에게서 그치지 않습니다. 궁극적으로는 하나님을 향해 화살이 향하게 됩니다. “하나님, 왜 저를 이런 환경에 버려 두셨어요?”, “하나님 왜 당장 저를 이 힘든 상황에서 꺼내주지 않으십니까?” 하나님을 향한 항변과 불평을 털어 놓기도 합니다. ‘나는 죽을 만큼 힘든 이런 고통을 하루가 멀다 하고 당하고 있는데, 왜 하나님은 나에게 무관심하신가?’하고 생각하며 하나님을 향한 섭섭한 마음을 갖기도 합니다.

한 가지 흥미로운 사실은 이처럼 하나님을 향해서 원망과 불평은 하는 사람 치고, 하나님께 진중하게 물어보는 경우는 보기 드물다는 것입니다. 즉 “하나님, 저에게 왜 이런 고통이 찾아왔나요? 혹시 이 시간들을 통해서 제게 하고 싶은 말씀이 있는 것입니까? 혹시 제가 저지른 어떤 특정한 죄 때문에 저에게 회개하라는 메시지를 주시는 것입니까?” 하고 물어보지 않고, “나는 내가 할 일을 다 했는데, 정작 하나님께서는 나를 보호해주고 돌봐 줄 책임을 다하고 계시지 않다.”하고 마치 하나님을 직무 유기자로, 약속을 지키지 않는 거짓말쟁이 하나님으로 생각하는 경우가 많습니다. 그러나 고난이야 말로 하나님께서 사용하시는 확성기 입니다. 성경 속 수 많은 사람들은 특별히 이해할 수 없는 고난이 찾아올 때마다 하나님 앞에 엎드려 기도하며 하나님께 그들이 당하고 있는 고난의 원인이 무엇인지 묻고 또 물었습니다. 우리들도 고난이 찾아올 때는 더욱 하나님께 나아가 하나님께서 우리에게 하고자 하시는 말씀이 무엇인지 귀 기울여 들을 수 있어야 합니다.

그런데 오늘 본문 속 바울을 한 번 생각해 보십시오. 그가 어떤 죄를 짓거나 잘못을 저질러서 로마 감옥에 갇힌 것이 아닙니다. 예수님에 대해서 증거하다가, 열심히 사역하다가 붙잡혀 죄수가 되었습니다. 따라서 바울이 당하고 있는 고난은 죄로 인한 심판이 아니라, 오히려 하나님의 일을 하다가 받는 핍박이었습니다. 그런데 바울은 여기서 놀라운 하나님의 은혜를 체험하게 됩니다. 자신에게 일어난 어려움이 도리어 하나님의 살아 계심을 나타내는데 사용되는 것을 경험하게 됩니다. 저는 이것을 “도리어의 은혜”라고 부르고 싶습니다. 한 번 따라해 보시겠습니까? “도리어의 은혜” 내가 처한 고난이 도리어 하나님의 역사를 나타내는 은혜입니다. 오늘 본문 12절 말씀을 함께 읽겠습니다. “(빌립보서 1장 12절) 형제들아 내가 당한 일이 도리어 복음 전파에 진전이 된 줄을 너희가 알기를 원하노라” “도리어의 은혜”를 다른 말로 표현하면 “전화위복의 은혜”입니다. 하나님께서 내가 당하고 있는 고난도 은혜의 방편으로 사용하신다는 겁니다. 비지니스가 어려움에 처해서 고난이 시작 되었는데, 그 가운데 도리어 상상하지도 못한 길이 열리며 오히려 그 상황 가운데 하나님께서 주님의 살아 계심을 경험하게 하십니다. 전화위복의 은혜죠! 건강이 악화하여 살아갈 용기를 잃어버리고, 장미빛 인생이 잿빛처럼 느껴질 정도로 낙담이 되었습니다. 그런데 이 질병을 통해서 도리어 하나님께서 놀랍도록 역사하십니다. 그래서 더 큰 복을 경험하게 하십니다.

바울이 감옥에 갇힌 이후, 더욱 선명하게 깨달은 것이 이것이었습니다. “하나님은 내가 겪는 고난도 선하게 사용하시는구나?” 하늘에 먹구름이 가득하고 비가 내린다고 해서 해가 없어진 것은 아닙니다. 비는 언젠가는 그치게 되고, 먹구름은 사라져 버릴 때가 옵니다. 그러나 태양은 늘 그 자리에 있습니다. 고난의 먹구름이 끼었다고 해서 햇살 같은 주님의 은혜가 사라진 것은 아닙니다. 또 하나 아주 중요한 사실이 있습니다. 고난이 있다고 해서 반드시 그 고난이 하나님께서 나를 미워하는 증거가 되는 것은 아닙니다. “이거 봐… 나 또 넘어졌어… 나 또 어려운 일 당했어… 이 정도 되면 하나님이 나를 싫어하신다고 밖에 해석할 수 밖에 없어…” 아닙니다. 고난은 하나님이 우리를 싫어하시거나 무관심하다는 증거가 아닙니다. 우리가 지금은 다 알 수 없어도, 하나님은 도리어의 은혜, 전화위복의 은혜를 토해서 우리의 고난도 아름답게 사용하십니다.

서울시 관악구 난곡로에 위치한 [주사랑공동체교회]라는 이름의 교회가 있습니다. 이 교회는 [베이비 박스]로 전 세계적으로 유명한 교회입니다. 미혼모들이 아기들을 봉지에 싸서 쓰레기통에 버리거나 인근 야산에 묻거나 하는 엽기적인 일들을 보며, 주사랑공동체교회는 교회 앞에 베이비박스를 설치했습니다. 천하보다 귀한 생명을 가진 그 아기들이 죽도록 버리지 않도록, 아기들을 살릴 수 있도록 베이비박스에 두고 갈 수 있도록 한 것이죠. (드롭박스)

이 교회 담임 목사님의 성함이 이종락 목사님입니다. 이 분은 처음부터 예수 잘 믿었던 분이 아닙니다. 집안은 유서 깊은 유교 집안입니다. 어린 시절부터 집안이 잘 살아서 마을에서 논과 밭이 제일 많았습니다. 정미소도 운영 했고, 집안에 머슴 셋을 둘 정도로 제법 부유했습니다. 이 분 아버지는 동네의 대소사를 직접 챙기셨던 존경 받는 어른이었습니다. 그러나 아들은 달랐습니다. 농번기가 되면 동네 사람들 너도 나도 다 함께 손발을 걷어 붙이고 진땀을 흘리며 모를 심었는데, 당시 고등학생이었던 이종락 목사님만 사람들의 눈을 피해 몰래 빠져 나와 기타와 장구를 매고 음주가무를 즐기며 술에 취해 살았습니다. 18살이 되던 해 집안 어르신들이 못된 고릇을 고쳐주겠다고 고주망태가 되어 버린 그를 잡고 매질까지 해봤으나, 그것도 며칠 뿐 못된 버릇은 고쳐지질 않았습니다.

그러던 어느 날 정미소에서 일하던 아버지의 큰 비명 소리가 들렸습니다. 무슨 일인가 가보니 발동기의 벨트에 아버지 몸이 끼어 이미 3m 이상 가량 끌어 올라간 상태였습니다. 당시 고등학생이던 이종락 목사님이 아무리 사력을 다해 아버지를 붙잡고 꺼내려 해봤지만 발도기의 벨트의 힘에 밀려 아버지는 계속 기계 속으로 빨려 들어가고 있었습니다. 기계에 몸이 끼기 시작한 아버지의 비명은 정미소에 울려 퍼졌습니다. 이대로 가면 끔찍한 일이 벌어질 것은 불 보듯 뻔했습니다. 이 때 온 힘을 다해 아버지의 몸을 잡아 당기던 이종락 목사님의 입에서 간절한 외마디 외침이 나왔습니다. “하나님 살려주세요!” 기독교인도 아니었으나, 너무나 다급했던 나머지 하나님을 찾은 것이죠. 그런데 놀라운 일이 벌어졌어요. 지금까지도 그 이유를 알 수 없는데, 그 외침 이후 갑자기 기계의 벨트가 벗겨지면서 작동하던 기계가 한 순간에 멈춰 버렸습니다. 아버지는 크게 다치신 후였습니다만, 다행히 목숨은 건질 수 있었습니다. 그런데 이 정미소 사건이 이종락 목사님의 인생을 바꿔 버렸어요. 위험천만한 상황에 불렀던 하나님… 여태까지는 교회에서 맛있는 간식 주고 선물 주고 하니까, 친구들 하고 부활절, 성탄절 때만 놀러갔던 교회였어요. 그러나 이 사건으로 인해 예수님을 구주로 영접하게 됩니다. 목사님 간증이, 나중에 자신의 인생을 돌아보니까, 내가 하나님을 찾은 게 아니라, 위기의 순간에 하나님께서 먼저 찾아오셔서 자신의 입술을 주장하셨다는 것을 깨달았다고 고백합니다. 결국 훗날 주의 종이 되어 세상에 버려지고 있는 수많은 신생아들을 살려내고 양육하여 주님께로 인도하는 삶을 살아가게 되었습니다.

고난은 우리의 삶을 변화시키는 놀라운 하나님의 방법입니다. 대부분의 사람들은 비 오는 날보다 햇살이 좋은 날을 더 선호합니다. 그러나 365일 비 오는 날 없이 햇살 좋은 날만 계속해서 이어진다면 어떻게 될까요? 땅이 매말라 갈라집니다. 가뭄과 기근이 찾아옵니다. 비 오는 날도 필요합니다. 마찬가지로 우리 인생에 고난이 없으면 좋을 것 같지만, 우리 인생에 고난이 없으면, 교만해지고, 하나님을 필요로 하지 않게 되어, 결국 주님으로부터 멀리 떠나가게 됩니다. 안 그럴 것 같지만 얼마나 많은 사람들이 고난 때문에 주님께 돌아왔는지 모릅니다. 감옥에 갇힌 바울이 발견한 비밀이 이것입니다. “하나님은 내가 처한 고난도 놀라운 방법으로 사용하시는구나?” 우리에게는 도리어의 은혜, 전화위복의 은혜가 있습니다. 혹시 지금 고난의 길을 통과하고 계십니까? 하나님께 더욱 가까이 나아가 주님께 이 상황을 놓고 기도하십시오. 혹시 이 고난을 통해서 하나님께서 하고자 하시는 말씀이 없는지 하나님께 물어 보십시오.

2. 고난이 도리어 믿음을 일으키다.

한편 사도 바울이 로마 감옥에 갇힘으로 말미암아 그는 이전에 감히 만날 수 없었던 사람들을 만나게 되는 신비한 체험을 하게 되었습니다. 먼저 가까이는 죄수 바울을 감시하며 근무하고 있는 여러 로마의 시위병들을 만나게 되었습니다. 또한 로마 황제의 친척들도 만났습니다. 또한 로마 도시에 살고 있는 수많은 이들이 바울이 갇혀 있는 감옥을 찾아오게 됨으로서 그들에게도 전도할 수 있는 길이 열리게 되었습니다. 로마 감옥에 갇힌 일이 도리어 바울의 전도의 기회를 넓혀 준 계기가 된 것입니다.

감옥이란 열악한 환경 속에서도, 일관되게 복음 전파의 사역을 이어가는 바울의 이러한 모습이 그를 바라보고 있던 다른 그리스도인들의 마음에 은혜의 파문을 일으키기 시작했습니다. 찬14절 말씀을 함께 읽겠습니다. “(빌립보서 1장 14절) 형제 중 다수가 나의 매임으로 말미암아 주 안에서 신뢰함으로 겁 없이 하나님의 말씀을 더욱 담대히 전하게 되었느니라” 물에 가까이 가면 옷이 젖기 마련이고, 뜨거운 불에 가까이 가면 옷이 타기 마련입니다. 바울은 불과 같은 열정을 가진 사람이었습니다. 바울이 투옥 가운데도 보여준 삶이 주를 믿는 다른 형제들의 믿음과 용기를 북돋아 주었습니다.

예전에 제가 경기도 수원에서 교회를 다닐 때 전도에 늘 진심이셨던 한 여자 집사님이 계셨습니다. 그러던 어느 날 이 집사님께서 암 판정을 받으셨습니다. 사람이 암 판정 받으면, 얼마나 마음이 두렵습니까? 삶을 다시 돌아보게 되기도 하고, 또 마음에 죽음에 대한 공포 또는 깊은 우울과 울적함이 찾아오기도 합니다. 그런데 이 집사님은 암 3기 판정 받고도 똑같이 웃고 계셨습니다. 물론 마음 속에서는 힘들어 하고 씨름 하고, 보이지 않는 곳에서는 많이 우셨겠죠. 그러나 암 판정 받은 이후에도 돌아 다니며 여전히 전도에 힘 쓰셨습니다. 그 집사님의 모습을 본 교회 청년들이 마음에 감동이 일어났어요. “이야, 저 집사님은 저렇게 몸이 아픈데도 열심히 주의 일 하시는데, 젊고 건강한 우리들은 더 열심히 전도 해야 하지 않을까?” 청년들도 주말에 자진해서 전도 나가기 시작했습니다.

하루는 똑같은 교회에서 불의의 사고로 초등학교 저학년 딸을 먼저 하늘 나라로 보낸 한 가족이 장례식을 마치고 바로 그 주일 예배 때 특송을 하기 위해 앞에 나왔습니다. 가족들도 울며 찬양을 불렀고, 모든 성도들이 울며 가슴으로 찬양을 들었습니다. 찬양의 가사는 고난 중에도 하나님을 찬양할 것이며, 하나님을 향한 믿음은 변치 않을 것이라는 것이었던 것으로 기억이 납니다. “아, 저 분들은 사랑하는 딸을 잃은 저 지독한 슬픔 가운데서도 믿음을 버리지 않았구나? 하나님을 향한 믿음을 끝까지 붙들고 있구나? 저것이 바로 믿음이구나?!” 보는 내내 제 마음에 감동이 스나미처럼 밀려왔습니다. 지금 오늘날까지도 그 가족이 특별 찬양하던 모습이 제 눈에 선합니다.

이처럼 고난 중에도 믿음으로 반응하는 사람들의 모습이 주변 사람들에게 얼마나 큰 믿음의 파문을 일으키는지 모릅니다. 뜨거운 신앙의 불이 마음에서 마음으로, 가슴에서 가슴으로 전파됩니다. 말로 해서 전파 되는 것이 아니라 삶으로서 전파 됩니다. 사도 바울이 감옥에서도 더욱 열심으로 하나님의 말씀을 전파하자, 더 많은 이들이 바울처럼 전도자로 살아가는 삶에 헌신했습니다. 바울이 처한 고난이 도리어 사람들의 믿음을 일으키는데 사용 되었습니다. 도리어의 은혜가 있는 것이죠.

우리는 역경 속에서도 믿음으로 행함으로, 내 주변 사람들로 하여금 나를 붙잡고 계시는 하나님을 신뢰하도록 뜨거운 불을 전파하는 사람입니까? 아니면 역경 속에서 쩔쩔 맴으로 다른 사람들로 하여금 나의 흔들림을 보고 결국 차갑게 식어 버린 냉수처럼 다른 이들도 주님을 향한 신앙의 불을 꺼트리는 사람입니까? 역경에 매여서 신세타령을 하고 있지는 않습니까? 고난 때문에 몸과 마음이 움츠려 들고 있지는 않습니까? 누군가에게 좇겨 사는 것처럼, 마음에 여유가 사라지고, 사람들을 돌 볼 여유마저 사라져 버려서, 사람들과의 만남을 짐스러워 하며 사람들을 피하고 있다면… 우리들은 뜨거운 불의 사람이 아니라 고난 앞에 냉냉하게 식어버린 믿음을 가진 것입니다. 도리어의 은혜를 기억하십시오. 하나님은 전화위복의 은혜를 베푸시는 역전의 명수 이십니다. 아직도 하나님은 일하고 계십니다.

3. 고난 중에도 도리어 기뻐하다.

물론 모든 사람이 다 사도 바울의 모습을 보고 도전을 받은 것은 아니었습니다. 이 세상에는 좋은 사람이 있는가 하면 나쁜 사람들도 분명 있습니다. 오늘 본문 말씀을 살펴 보면, 앞서 바울의 모습에 도전을 받은 사람들은 ‘착한 뜻으로’(15절), ‘사랑으로’(16절), 참마음[순수함](18절)으로 바울처럼 복음을 전했습니다.

그러나 바울이 감옥에 갇혀 있다는 소식을 듣고 고소해 하는 이들도 있었습니다. “바울 쌤통이다! 네 인생이 그렇지 뭐! 네가 감옥에 갇힌 것은 하나님께서 너의 사역을 인정하지 않으신다는 증거야!” 이런 식으로 바울이 낭패 본 것을 고소해 하고, 바울의 계획이 수포로 돌아갔다며 내심 흐뭇하게 생각하는 악한 원수들이 있었습니다. 세상에는 지금도 악한 자들이 있고요, 원수들이 있습니다. 나에게 일어난 좋은 소식보다 나에게 일어난 안 좋은 소식이 더 빨리 퍼집니다. 혹시 우리를 괴롭히는 이들의 비판이 정당하다면, 우리의 연약함을 고쳐 나가면 됩니다. 그런데 만약 그들의 비판이 부당하다면, “구멍 뚫린 주머니”를 하나 준비하십시오. 그리고 그들의 비판을 그 구멍 뚫린 주머니에 집어 넣으십시오. 거기에 연연하지 말라는 말입니다.

여러분 목숨을 걸고 오지에 나가 복음을 전하겠노라고 다짐하고 헌신하신 선교사님들이 모이는 곳에도 분쟁이 일어나더랍니다. 어떤 대형 교회 목사님이 건강이 좋지 않다는 소문이 났는데, 한 주 지나니까 그 분이 식물인간 되었다는 루머로 교계에 확대 되었습니다. 그 다음은 내가 그 자리에 올라가야 하니까 빨리 그 자리에서 내려 오라는 거죠. 항상 악한 동기를 가진 사람들은 우리 주변에 얼마든지 있습니다. “(빌립보서 1장 17절) 그들은 나의 매임에 괴로움을 더하게 할 줄로 생각하여 순수하지 못하게 다툼으로 그리스도를 전파하느니라” 시기(15, 17절), 다툼(15, 17), 바울에게 괴로움을 더하게 하려는 경쟁심(17절), 불순한 동기(17절), 겉치레[거짓된 마음](18절)으로 복음을 전파하던 이상한 사람들이 있었다는 거에요.

여러분 혹시 “사울 신드롬”이라는 말 들어 보셨습니까? 윗 사람이 아랫 사람 성공하지 못하도록 은근히 압력을 가하는 현상을 의미합니다. 선배들에게는 백성의 칭찬을 한 몸에 받은 다윗을 시기하여 그를 추격하려고 했던 사울과 같은 심정이 있다는 거에요. 자기보다 뛰어난 후배가 나타나는 꼴을 보지를 못하는 거죠. 사울 신드롬, 회사나 사회 조직에만 있는 게 아니에요. 교회에서도 있습니다. 내가 하나님 안에서 신앙생활 잘하면 될 것 같은데, 나를 시기하는 사람들이 있어요. 여러분 우리는 사울 같은 마음 가져서는 안 됩니다.

사울 신드롬만 있는게 아니에요. “압살롬 신드롬”도 있습니다. 자신의 윗 사람이었던 다윗에게 향한 백성들의 마음을 도적질한 압살롬의 심보가 후배들에게 있는 거죠. “저 선배보다 내가 더 나은데! 저 사람은 뭐 잘 난게 있다고 저 자리에 있어!” 선배와 후배, 선임과 후임 관계에서만 시기 질투가 있는 것이 아닙니다. 직장 동료들 사이에서도 암투와 시기가 얼마나 많은지 모릅니다.

그런데 아까 제가 이런 악한 사람들이 부당한 비판을 하면 어떤 주머니에 넣으라고 말씀드렸어요? “구멍 뚫린 주머니”에요. 진짜 세상에는 나쁜 사람들이 있어요. 이유도 없이 우리를 헐뜯는 사람, 시기와 질투에 눈이 멀어 우리를 공격하는 사람들이 있습니다. 정당한 비판이면 우리가 감내하고 더 좋은 모습으로 변화시켜 나가면 됩니다. 그러나 부당한 비판까지 다 가슴에 품고 살 이유는 없습니다. 구멍 뚫린 주머니에 넣어 버리세요. 그리고 다시 꺼내지 마세요.

바울의 반응 볼까요? “(빌립보서 1장 18절) 그러면 무엇이냐 겉치레로 하나 참으로 하나 무슨 방도로 하든지 전파되는 것은 그리스도니 이로써 나는 기뻐하고 또한 기뻐하리라” 바울의 고백 한 문장으로 정리하면 다음과 같습니다. “도리어의 은혜가 있더라!” “아무리 상황이 열악하고, 나를 비방하는 사람들이 있어도 하나님은 여전히 살아 계시더라! 여전히 하나님은 일하고 계시더라!” 이 사실을 깨달은 바울이 말합니다. “이로써 나는 기뻐하고 또한 기뻐하리라!”

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 고난에 처해도, 사방으로 우겨쌈을 당해도, 거꾸로 매달려도, 비방을 당해도 살아 계신 우리 주님은 여전히 우리의 삶 가운데 역사하고 계십니다. 그리고 주님의 약속은 성취되고, 주님의 일은 완성 됩니다. 우리가 주님의 편에 서 있을 수만 있다면, 승리는 백 번이면 백 번 다 우리의 것입니다. 우리가 주 안에서 살아가면, 고난은 도리어 은혜가 됩니다. 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 이 도리어의 은혜, 전화위복의 은혜를 붙들고 그 어떠한 상황과 환경에서도 주님을 바라보며 믿음으로 살아갈 수 있는 저와 여러분 되기를 주님의 이름으로 축복합니다.

Suffering turns into grace (Philippians 1:12-18)

Introduction: The house where the elephant came in

On March 23rd, in the Children’s Grand Park in Seoul, a male zebra named ‘Sero’ escaped, causing a stir on social media as it roamed the busy streets and narrow alleys. Fortunately, with the help of experts, the zebra was caught in, after being hit by a tranquilizer gun and returned to the zoo 3 hours and 30 minutes after the escape. How absurd would it have been for the citizens who saw a wild animal, a zebra no less, running around in the middle of Seoul city? It is a once-in-a-lifetime rare scene.

However, this was not the first time an animal escaped from the Seoul Children’s Grand Park. An even more astonishing zoo escape occurred in the past. On April 20, 2005, six elephants escaped in a group, causing a huge commotion. It was already a tremendous event when one horse ran wild in the city, but it was a literal uproar when six elephants roamed the city together. The elephants caused havoc, trampling people and breaking objects before entering a restaurant named ‘Miga.’ When three elephants entered the restaurant, chaos ensued. At the time, the elephants ate vegetables like carrots inside the restaurant, broke the glass windows, damaged the delivery motorcycles, and shattered tables and chairs, causing significant property damage.

The restaurant owner at the time, Kim Taek-hoon, was speechless in disbelief. To make matters worse, the restaurant was a mess, making it impossible to operate. It was such an absurd situation that people might not believe it when he said, “Elephants entered the store and broke all the utensils and equipment.” Fortunately, owner Kim received compensation for the damages and took the opportunity to invest more of his money in remodeling his old restaurant. He also changed the name of the restaurant from ‘Miga’ to ‘The House Where the Elephant Came In, Miga.’ He added a new menu item called ‘Elephant Set Meal.’ After the incident, the restaurant gained fame. Citizens said, “This is the house where the elephant went in!” and out of curiosity, the restaurant became extremely popular, with a noticeable increase in customers and sales. It became a truly successful restaurant.

Unfortunate situations or events that unexpectedly bring blessings can be referred to as ‘turning calamity into blessing’ or ‘reversing misfortune into fortune.’ Disasters, worries, and concerns have turned into blessings. Today, Apostle Paul shares the story of turning calamity into blessing in his life. The reason we can read his story with interest is that the grace of turning calamity into blessing experienced by Apostle Paul applies equally to all believers. Are there any of you who are living thinking, “I am unhappy” these days? Are there any who feel discouraged, asking, “Why am I in such a bad situation?” or “Why is nothing working out in my life?” Through today’s Word, let’s examine how God works in our lives amidst suffering and how we can respond in faith during difficult times.

1. Adversity serves to fulfill God’s work.

In today’s scripture, Apostle Paul is imprisoned in a Roman jail. According to Acts 28:20, Paul’s body is bound in chains: “[Acts 28:20] Therefore I have called you to see you and speak with you, because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.” Apostle Paul became a prisoner, bound in chains and locked in jail, because he was caught while testifying about Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection and teaching the gospel.

From a human perspective, the event that led to Paul’s imprisonment could have caused significant hindrances to his evangelism work as he traveled from city to city, establishing churches and testifying about Jesus Christ. Let’s compare the situation Paul faced in the text to today’s situation. Suppose we are operating a small business. One day, a customer unjustly files a large lawsuit against us, forcing us to close the shop. Or, suddenly, we experience health problems that leave us bedridden in a hospital without hope for recovery. We may be in a situation where family discord or personal circumstances make it very difficult for us to leave, but we cannot do so. The hardest part is not knowing how long we have to continue living like this without any hope or relief.

As we live our lives, we will face various adversities that we cannot overcome or escape on our own. Some people may lament their fate at times. Others may despair of their inability and limitations in the face of real-world challenges, regretting the past and sighing. Some people may blame all their misfortunes on the people around them, harboring resentment and hatred. “Oh, my fate… How did I end up like this after meeting that enemy-like person?” In extreme cases, there are people who blame their parents, spouses, siblings, or children.

However, such resentment and complaints towards people do not stop with people. Ultimately, the arrow points towards God. “God, why did You abandon me in this environment?”, “God, why won’t You rescue me from this difficult situation right away?” People express their grievances and complaints towards God. They harbor bitter feelings towards God, thinking, ‘I am going through unbearable pain every day, so why is God indifferent to me?’

One interesting fact is that people who complain and grumble about God rarely genuinely ask God. In other words, instead of asking, “God, why did this suffering come upon me? Is there a message you want to convey to me through these times? Is there a specific sin I committed that you are sending me a message to repent?”, people often think of God as a negligent and unfaithful God, claiming, “I have done everything I could, but God is not fulfilling his responsibility to protect and care for me.” However, suffering is a megaphone God uses. Numerous people in the Bible would pray before God and ask the cause of their suffering whenever they faced inexplicable hardships. We, too, should draw closer to God when suffering comes and listen attentively to what God wants to tell us.

Consider Apostle Paul in today’s text. He was not imprisoned in Rome because of a sin or wrongdoing; he became a prisoner for testifying about Jesus and working diligently. Therefore, Paul’s suffering was not a judgment due to sin, but rather persecution for doing God’s work. However, Paul experiences a surprising grace from God. He experiences that his difficulties are used to reveal God’s living presence. I want to call this the “grace of on the contrary.” Shall we try it once? “The grace of on the contrary” – the suffering I face is the grace that reveals God’s work. Let’s read verse 12 of today’s text together: “(Philippians 1:12) I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.” The “grace of on the contrary” can also be expressed as the “grace of turning misfortune into fortune.” It means that God uses even the suffering we are experiencing as a means of grace. A business faces difficulties and suffering begins, but in the midst of that, unimaginable paths open up, and God lets us experience the Lord’s living presence in that situation. It’s the grace of turning misfortune into fortune! Health deteriorates, and we lose the courage to live, and life feels as gray as ashes. But through this disease, God surprisingly works and allows us to experience even greater blessings.

What Paul realized more vividly after being imprisoned is this: “God uses the suffering I experience for good?” The sun does not disappear just because there are dark clouds in the sky and it is raining. The rain will eventually stop, and the dark clouds will disappear. But the sun is always in its place. The grace of the Lord, like sunshine, does not disappear just because the dark clouds of suffering have covered it. There is also another very important fact. Just because there is suffering does not mean that the suffering is evidence of God’s hatred. “Look… I fell again… I had a hard time again… At this point, I can only interpret that God hates me…” No. Suffering is not evidence that God hates or is indifferent to us. Although we cannot know everything now, God uses our suffering beautifully through the grace of on the contrary, the grace of turning misfortune into fortune.

There is a church called “Jusarang Community Church” in Seoul. This church is globally famous for its “Baby Box.” Upon witnessing unwed mothers wrapping their babies in bags and throwing them into trash cans or burying them in nearby mountains, Jusarang Community Church installed a Baby Box in front of the church. This was done to save the precious lives of these babies, allowing people to leave them in the Baby Box instead of abandoning them to die. (Drop Box)

The pastor in charge of this church is Pastor Lee Jong-rak. He wasn’t a devout believer in Jesus from the beginning. His family was from a long-standing Confucian family. Since his childhood, his family was well-off, owning the most fields and paddies in the village. They also ran a milling shop and had three servants, indicating their affluence. His father was a respected elder who personally took care of the village’s affairs. However, the son was different. When it was farming season, everyone in the village worked together, planting seeds and sweating, but Pastor Lee Jong-rak, who was a high school student at the time, would secretly slip away to enjoy drinking and dancing with a guitar and drum. When he turned 18, his family tried to correct his bad habits by beating him, but it didn’t last long.

One day, a loud scream came from his father working at the milling shop. When they checked what had happened, his father’s body was caught in the engine belt and had already been dragged more than 3 meters. Although Pastor Lee Jong-rak, who was a high school student at the time, tried his best to save his father, his father was continuously being pulled into the machine. As his father’s body got caught in the machine, his screams echoed throughout the milling shop. It was clear that something terrible was about to happen. At that moment, Pastor Lee Jong-rak, who was desperately holding onto his father, cried out, “God, please save him!” He wasn’t even a Christian, but he was so desperate that he sought God. Then, a surprising thing happened. For an unknown reason, after his cry, the machine’s belt suddenly came off, and the machine stopped in an instant. His father was severely injured, but fortunately, his life was saved. However, this incident at the milling shop changed Pastor Lee Jong-rak’s life. He had only gone to church to get tasty snacks and gifts with his friends during Easter and Christmas, but this incident led him to accept Jesus as his savior. Later in his testimony, he confessed that when he looked back on his life, it wasn’t him who found God, but God who had found him first during his moment of crisis. Eventually, he became a servant of the Lord, saving and raising countless abandoned newborns, leading them to the Lord.

Hardship is a remarkable way God uses to transform our lives. Most people prefer sunny days over rainy ones. But what if there were only sunny days for 365 days, without any rainy days? The ground would dry up and crack. Drought and famine would come. We need rainy days as well. Similarly, it might seem nice to have no hardships in our lives, but without them, we can become arrogant, not needing God, and ultimately drift away from the Lord. It might not seem like it, but countless people have turned back to the Lord because of hardships. The secret discovered by Paul, who was imprisoned, is this: “God uses even the hardships I face in amazing ways, doesn’t He?” We have the grace of contrariety and blessing in disguise. Are you going through a path of hardship right now? Draw closer to God and pray to Him about your situation. Ask Him if there is something He wants to tell you through this hardship.

2. Hardship can give rise to faith.

On the other hand, Apostle Paul had a mysterious experience meeting people he could never have met before due to being imprisoned in a Roman prison. First, he met various Roman soldiers who were guarding him as a prisoner. He also met relatives of the Roman emperor. Moreover, many people living in the city of Rome came to visit the prison where Paul was held, opening the way for him to evangelize to them as well. Being imprisoned in the Roman prison actually became an opportunity for Paul to expand his missionary work.

In the harsh environment of the prison, Paul’s consistent commitment to spreading the gospel began to create ripples of grace in the hearts of other Christians who were watching him. Let’s read Philippians 1:14 together: “And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.” When one is close to water, their clothes get wet; when one is close to a hot fire, their clothes burn. Paul was a man with a fiery passion. Paul’s life, even amidst imprisonment, encouraged the faith and courage of other brothers and sisters in Christ.

When I used to attend a church in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, there was a female deacon who was always sincere about evangelism. One day, she was diagnosed with cancer. When someone is diagnosed with cancer, they can be filled with fear, start to reflect on their life, and become overwhelmed with a deep sense of dread or depression. However, this deacon continued to smile even after being diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. Of course, she must have struggled and cried in places no one could see. But even after the diagnosis, she continued to evangelize. The young people of the church were touched by her example. They thought, “If she can work so hard for the Lord even when she’s so sick, shouldn’t we, young and healthy, be even more diligent in evangelism?” The youth began to volunteer for evangelism on weekends.

One day, a family in the same church who had sent their young elementary school-aged daughter to heaven due to an unexpected accident held a funeral and came forward to perform a special song during the Sunday service immediately after. The family members cried as they sang praises, and all the saints listened to the praise with their hearts, also in tears. I remember that the lyrics of the praise were about praising God even in times of hardship and that faith in God would not change. “Ah, they didn’t abandon their faith even in the midst of that terrible sadness of losing their beloved daughter? They’re holding onto their faith in God until the end? That’s what faith is?!” I was deeply moved as I watched, like a wave of emotion crashing over me. Even now, I can still see the image of that family singing the special praise.

We never know how much the appearance of people responding with faith during hardships can create a ripple effect of faith in those around them. The fire of passionate faith spreads from heart to heart, chest to chest. It’s not propagated through words but through life itself. As Apostle Paul preached God’s word even more diligently in prison, more people devoted themselves to living a life as evangelists like him. Paul’s hardships were used to give rise to the faith of others. This is the grace of turning the tables.

Are we the ones who propagate the fiery faith to trust in God, who holds onto us even during adversities? Or are we the ones who, struggling in the face of adversity, cause others to see our wavering and eventually extinguish the fire of faith towards the Lord, like cold water that has cooled down? Are we caught up in adversity and complaining? Are we cowering in body and mind because of hardships? If we lose the peace of mind and even the ability to care for others, avoiding people because meeting them feels like a burden… then we are not people with fiery faith but rather with a faith that has cooled down in the face of adversity. Remember the grace of turning the tables. God is the master of reversal, who bestows the grace of turning misfortunes into blessings. God is still at work.

3. Rejoice even in hardships.

Of course, not everyone was inspired by the Apostle Paul’s example. In this world, there are good people, but there are also undoubtedly bad people. When we examine today’s scripture, those who were inspired by Paul’s example earlier preached the gospel like Paul, with a ‘good intention'(verse 15), ‘out of love'(verse 16), and with a pure heart(verse 18). However, there were also those who delighted in the news of Paul’s imprisonment. “Paul deserves it! That’s what your life is like! Your imprisonment is proof that God doesn’t approve of your ministry!” They delighted in Paul’s downfall and secretly enjoyed the thought of Paul’s plans being thwarted. There were evil enemies in this world, and there still are. Bad news about us spreads faster than good news. If the criticism from those who torment us is justified, we should correct our weaknesses. But if their criticism is unjust, prepare a “pocket with a hole” and put their criticisms in that hole-filled pocket. In other words, don’t dwell on it.

Even in places where missionaries devote themselves to evangelism with their lives on the line, conflicts arise. When rumors spread that a large church pastor was in poor health, within a week, the rumor had expanded to the pastor being in a vegetative state. Next, they demanded that the pastor step down so they could take their place. There are always people with malicious motives around us. “(Philippians 1:17) They proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, but intending to increase my suffering in my chains.” Jealousy(verses 15, 17), disputes(verses 15, 17), a competitive spirit to add suffering to Paul(verse 17), impure motives(verse 17), and strange people who preach the gospel with false hearts(verse 18) were present.

Have you ever heard of the term “Saul Syndrome”? It refers to the phenomenon of a superior secretly putting pressure on a subordinate to prevent their success. It’s like the mindset of Saul, who, having received the praises of the people, was jealous of David and tried to pursue him. They can’t stand the sight of a junior who is more outstanding than themselves. The Saul Syndrome is not only found in companies or social organizations but also in churches. It seems like it would be enough to live a faithful life in God, but there are people who are jealous of me. We must not have a mindset like Saul’s.

The “Saul Syndrome” isn’t the only one. There’s also the “Absalom Syndrome.” It refers to the mindset of Absalom, who stole the hearts of the people from his superior, David, and it can be found in the juniors as well. “I’m better than that senior! What’s so great about them that they’re in that position!” Jealousy and envy exist not only between seniors and juniors or between mentors and mentees but also among colleagues at work. The amount of competition and envy between them is immense.

Now, remember the pocket I mentioned earlier for putting in unfair criticisms from these evil people? It’s the “pocket with a hole.” There are indeed bad people in the world. People who criticize us without reason, people who attack us because they are blinded by jealousy and envy. If the criticism is justified, we should endure and change ourselves for the better. However, there’s no reason to carry all the unjust criticisms in our hearts. Put them in the hole-filled pocket and don’t take them out again.

Let’s look at Paul’s response: “(Philippians 1:18) But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this, I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice.” In one sentence, Paul’s confession can be summarized as follows: “There was grace in spite of it all!” “No matter how dire the situation, how many people were slandering me, God is still alive! God is still at work!” Paul, realizing this fact, says, “I rejoice and will continue to rejoice!”

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, even in hardships, even when we are oppressed from all sides, even when we are hung upside down, and even when we are slandered, our living Lord is still at work in our lives. The Lord’s promises are fulfilled, and the Lord’s work is completed. If we can stand by the Lord, victory is ours every single time. As we live in the Lord, hardships become grace. I pray that you and I can hold on to this grace of “in spite of it all” and live in faith, looking to the Lord in any situation and environment, in the name of the Lord.
